In the world of entrepreneurship, feeling stuck can sometimes feel like part of the journey. Perhaps you’ve said, “I’m not hitting my income goals” or “My business isn’t where I want it to be.” But what if a simple shift in language could change everything? Enter the power of yet. Adding yet to your statements—“I’m not there yet”—transforms them from closed doors to windows of possibility. It’s a small change with a big impact, shifting you from frustration to a growth mindset.

Find out how embracing yet can empower you to celebrate progress, transform failure, and keep moving forward. Success might be closer than you think!

Why Adding Yet to Your Thinking Changes Everything

Many of us fall into the trap of focusing on what hasn’t happened yet: the revenue goals unmet, clients we haven’t signed, or milestones we haven’t reached. The gap between where we are and where we want to be can feel discouraging. But adding yet keeps that door open, reminding us that we’re in progress, not at a dead end.

By reframing statements like “I’m not good at this” to “I’m not good at this yet,” you open up a world of growth possibilities. You’re no longer stuck; you’re on a journey.

Quick Tip: When you hear yourself feeling limited, try adding yet and see how that tiny change boosts your mindset.

 1. Shift Your Mindset from Fixed to Growth

The “yet” mindset is a reminder that success is a process, not an immediate destination. Catch yourself when you think, “I can’t” or “I’m not.” Take a deep breath, recognize that you’re in the process, and add yet. You may not be where you want to be, but you’re on your way. By shifting to a growth mindset, you can start seeing obstacles as stepping stones rather than roadblocks.

Example: Instead of saying, “My business isn’t growing fast enough,” try saying, “My business isn’t where I want it to be yet.”

 2. Celebrate Small Wins Along the Journey

Tunnel vision on big goals can sometimes overshadow the smaller victories. Keep a ‘win journal’ to jot down small accomplishments. These add up over time and remind you of the progress you’re making, even if the end goal still seems distant.

Try This: At the end of each week, write down three small wins that made a positive impact, no matter how minor. Over time, you’ll see a record of your growth.

 3. Keep Learning and Growing

A yet mindset encourages continuous learning. It’s not about having all the answers right now; it’s about staying open to growth. If there’s a skill you’re struggling with, remind yourself that it’s a skill you can build. For instance, maybe you’re working on mastering marketing or financial management. Approach these challenges as ongoing learning opportunities.

Example: Tell yourself, “I don’t understand this yet, but I’m committed to learning.”

 4. Be Patient with Your Timeline

We often put intense pressure on ourselves to meet goals quickly, which can lead to burnout. Give yourself permission to adjust your timeline and focus on steady progress rather than speed. Remember, every business owner’s journey looks different, and it’s about getting there sustainably.

I once worked with a business owner who set this rigid one-year timeline to hit $200,000 in revenue. But as we moved through that year, she realized she was learning so much about her audience, her offers, and her market that her original plan needed to shift. By giving herself the permission to adjust the timeline—without seeing it as a failure—she ultimately hit that revenue goal. It just happened in year two instead of year one. But that’s still a success!

 5. Surround Yourself with Supportive People

The company you keep can shape how you perceive your progress. Surround yourself with people who support your journey and remind you of your potential. Being part of a community, whether a mastermind group, mentor network, or supportive peer group, can keep you encouraged.

Tip: Seek out like-minded business owners who understand the entrepreneurial journey. They can provide perspective and motivation when you need it most.

 6. Reframe Failure as a Step Toward Your “Yet”

Fear of failure can be paralyzing, but embracing “yet” means viewing setbacks as learning opportunities rather than dead ends. Failure isn’t final; it’s just a detour toward your success. Use it to gain insights and refine your approach.

I remember launching a product a few years ago that completely flopped. I was devastated. It felt like a huge step back, and I really questioned if I was on the right path. But instead of giving up, I took it as a chance to learn. What didn’t resonate? What needed to change? I reworked the offer, the messaging, and prepared to try again.  That flop wasn’t the end of the road—it was just a detour on the way to my “yet.”

The Bottom Line: You’re Closer to Your Success Than You Think

Embracing “yet” is about believing in your potential and your journey. It’s a reminder that progress is happening, even if it’s not always visible. So, the next time you feel discouraged, remember that you’re in motion. You may not be where you want to be yet, but your success is just around the corner.

Keep going, keep growing, and keep believing in your “yet.”
