Building a business doesn’t get easier just because you’ve started. The fears simply shift. You might find yourself wondering if anyone really cares about what you have to say, or questioning whether you’re qualified to lead, teach, or grow something bigger. These business fears and doubts are more common than most people admit.
The truth is, building confidence rarely shows up first. Action does. Waiting to feel 100% ready will only keep you stuck, and the longer you wait, the louder the fear becomes. The most successful business owners learn to take action scared, using their fear as a signal to move forward rather than a reason to stop.
You don’t need to eliminate fear to make progress. You need to move forward alongside it and learn how to overcome fear in business without waiting for confidence to arrive. Growth often looks messy, uncertain, and uncomfortable, but it’s also how you build something meaningful and lasting.
Why Fear is a Constant Companion for Entrepreneurs
Fear doesn’t just appear when you’re about to make a big decision. It can sneak into your business in subtle ways, holding you back before you even realize it. Maybe it’s causing procrastination—spending weeks tweaking your website or endlessly brainstorming content but never actually hitting publish. Or perhaps it shows up as perfectionism—waiting for everything to be just right before you take the leap.
Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
When I launched my membership, the Profitable Small Business Club, I faced a constant battle with fear. I found myself asking, “Who am I to give advice?” and “What if no one cares about what I have to offer?” Despite years of experience helping small business owners set up systems and grow sustainably, that voice of self-doubt was relentless. But the important thing is this: I kept showing up anyway.
The Power of Small, Consistent Action
One of the biggest breakthroughs I had during this journey was realizing that confidence is not something you have before you act—it’s something that comes after you take action. For example, when I started working on marketing the Profitable Small Business Club, it felt massive. How could I communicate the value of something that didn’t even exist yet?
Rather than being paralyzed by the big task ahead, I broke it down into small, manageable steps. One day, I focused on drafting a single email. The next day, it was outlining a sales page. By focusing on just one small task at a time, I began to build momentum—and with that momentum, came confidence.
Perfection Doesn’t Exist: Start Messy, Start Now
Another huge lesson I’ve learned is that perfection is a trap. Waiting for everything to be “perfect” before you take action can leave you stuck in an endless cycle of delays. When fear is at the wheel, you might find yourself endlessly tweaking your website or hesitating to publish your content because you’re waiting for the perfect moment.
But here’s the thing: that perfect moment never arrives. It’s just a myth. And more often than not, waiting for perfection means you’ll never get started at all.
I gave myself permission to start messy. The first email I sent wasn’t flawless, but it was real. The first version of my website was far from perfect, but it was live and functional. Starting messy didn’t stop me; it allowed me to take action, learn, and improve as I went along.
Your Experience is Enough
You might be thinking, “I’m not a top expert in my field. Who am I to give advice?” I’ve had that thought too. It’s easy to feel like your voice doesn’t matter unless you’re some kind of business guru with years of experience or huge success under your belt.
But here’s the truth: your experience matters. You don’t need to be the world’s foremost authority to help others. Your unique perspective, your lessons learned, and your journey are incredibly valuable. Believe that there’s someone out there who needs what you have to offer right now.
I’m not the perfect example of a successful entrepreneur, but I’ve learned a lot over the years—especially about how to navigate the overwhelm and build systems that work. That experience is what I share with others, and it’s what makes a difference in their businesses.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Starting a business is a journey, and it’s not one you have to take alone. While fear and doubt can feel isolating, there’s support out there if you’re open to it. Whether it’s finding a community of like-minded entrepreneurs, hiring a coach, or relying on resources like podcasts and blog posts (hello!), reaching out for help can make a huge difference.
If you’re feeling stuck or uncertain, I want you to know that you don’t have to go it alone. Whether it’s sending an email, engaging in a social media conversation, or simply listening to the next podcast episode, you’ve got options. (You can find my contact information at the bottom of this post.) And I’m here cheering you on every step of the way.
A Practical Tip: Start Small, But Start Today
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done in your business, here’s a quick tip: break your big goals into tiny, manageable tasks—and start today.
For example:
- Want to create a new habit? Start by doing it for just five minutes a day.
- Have a big project? Identify one tiny task you can complete today, like drafting a sentence or organizing your tools.
The key is to not wait for the perfect moment to start. Perfection doesn’t exist, and momentum only builds if you take that first step.
Fear is a constant companion in business, but it doesn’t have to stop you from moving forward. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you start—just show up, take small steps, and keep moving forward. And if you’re feeling stuck, remember that there’s always support available.
