Welcome back, small business owners! Are you building a business that supports your dream life—or one that drains it? In today’s episode, we’re diving into how to align your business with your life goals. First, we’ll define what success means in your life outside of your business, and then you’ll learn practical steps to evaluate your business and shape it to fund the life you want. When your business supports your life, rather than your life supporting your business, you can gain the freedom you envisioned when you started your business.
If you’ve been tuning in to the podcast, you know we’re in the middle of the Dream Big, Plan Smart series. (Missed the start of the series? Click here.) In the first two episodes, we reflected on the past year and envisioned what we want life to look like one year from now. Those exercises gave us clarity on where we’ve been, where we are, and where we want to go. If you don’t have the free workbook for this series yet, download it to follow along.
Are You Building Freedom or a Hamster Wheel?
Let’s start with a truth many business owners face: While we start our businesses dreaming of freedom, we often end up working longer hours, chasing ideas, and feeling drained. Instead of a life of possibility, it can feel like we’re trapped on a hamster wheel.
A few years ago, I worked with a client named Sarah. On paper, her business looked great—steady clients, solid revenue, and a growing team. But when we dug deeper, she admitted she felt stuck. Her days were filled with back-to-back meetings, her nights with client work, and her weekends with catch-up tasks. This wasn’t the freedom she’d dreamed of when she started her business.
Sarah isn’t alone. Many of us have been there, chasing the next thing without asking, “Does my business actually support the life I want?”
Create Your Personal Definition of Success
The first step in creating a business that supports your life is defining what success looks like for you—beyond just business metrics.
Relationships
Who matters most to you? Are you spending enough time with them? Maybe you dream of more family dinners, weekend getaways, or simply unplugged evenings with loved ones.
Lifestyle
What kind of environment do you want to create? Is your home supporting you, or is it stressing you out? Small upgrades like organizing your workspace or creating a cozy reading nook can make a big difference.
Health and Wellness
How do you want to feel? It could be as simple as having the energy to tackle your day or carving out time for walks, yoga, or meal prep.
Hobbies
When was the last time you did something just for fun? One client of mine took up photography, saying it was the perfect way to clear her head while being creative.
Emotional Well-being
What fills your cup? Whether it’s journaling, meditation, or simply a quiet moment with coffee, prioritize what makes you feel grounded and happy.
These areas are your filters for every business decision moving forward.
Redefine Success in Your Business
Now, let’s look at your business. I want you to define success in your business outside of just money or reaching the goals you set at the beginning of the year. You could meet the goals you wrote down while spending most of the year stressed about money or clients.
Your Ideal Clients
Who are your dream clients? These are the people who respect your boundaries, value your work, and pay you what you’re worth.
Take James, a former client of mine. He realized 80% of his stress came from one high-maintenance client. After letting that client go, he freed up time and energy to focus on clients who truly valued him.
Your Offers
What services or products excite you? Look at what you offered last year and evaluate their performance. Write down each offer, price, number of sales, and total revenue. Ask yourself:
- Which offers are time sinks?
- Which generate the most revenue with the least effort?
Are you holding onto a low-performing course out of nostalgia? Is it time to retire it and focus your time, energy and resources on a more effective offer? Doing this can increase your revenue while reducing your stress.
Your Marketing
Where are your clients coming from? Look at your last 10 clients and track how they found you.
For instance, if most of your clients came from referrals, but you’re spending hours on Instagram reels, it might be time to shift your focus. One client discovered her top clients came from webinars and collaborations. Doubling down on those strategies saved her time and delivered better results.
In your marketing, are you expressing yourself naturally, or are you forcing yourself into advertising methods that don’t fit your personality?
Making the Numbers Work
Finally, let’s talk about money. Your business should fund your life, not the other way around.
If you haven’t already, download the Get Paid Like a CEO Toolkit. It helps you calculate how much your business needs to pay you to live the life you want. Then, compare that to your current revenue and adjust as needed.
For example:
- Could you simplify your offers to focus on what’s most profitable?
- Can you delegate or outsource tasks to free up your time for higher-value activities?
Your Action Steps
Here’s what to do next:
- Download the free workbook to guide you through exercises on defining success in life and business.
- Evaluate your offers and clients to focus on what’s truly working.
- Analyze your marketing and shift energy toward what delivers the best results.
By the end of this process, you’ll have clear next steps for aligning your business with the life you want.
If you’re ready to dig even deeper, the Get Paid Like a CEO Toolkit will help you crunch the numbers and make sure your business is set up to fund your dream life.
Let’s make this the year your business works for you, not the other way around.
